Mount Elgon National Park

Mount Elgon National Park is a national park 140 kilometres (87 mi) northeast of Lake Victoria. The park covers an area of 1,279 square kilometres (494 sq mi) and is bisected by the border of Kenya and Uganda. The Ugandan part of the park covers 1,110 km 2 (430 sq mi) while the Kenyan part covers 169 km 2 (65 sq mi).

Mount Elgon National Park features Mount Elgon, an extinct volcano which at 4000km2 has the largest volcanic base in the world and lies on the border of Eastern Uganda and Western Kenya. It’s vast from, 80km Diameter, rises 300m above the surrounding plains. It has a mountainous regional landscape which provides refuge for flora and fauna.

The park is home to over 300 species of birds including the endangered lammergeyer, small antelopes, forest monkeys, elephants and buffalos also live on the mountain side. The higher slopes are protected by national parks in Uganda and Kenya, creating extensive trans-boundary conservation area which has been declared a UNCESCO Main Biosphere Reserve.
